From author Deborah Bagley: “I hope these techniques will start you thinking about how you can create your own three-dimensional projects. With such a variety of animals there’s something for everyone to enjoy, especially small children. In fact, each Zoo Crew critter was pre-hugged and cuddled by my very own two-year-old before it was approved for publication.”

I don't need another book ... BUT THOSE PICTURES ARE SO CUTE!

Mostly for the cheerful and superb photography I decided to treat myself to this book. And I'm so glad I did, since the benefits go far beyond just cuteness.

The book is well organized in three chapters. Chapter 1 summarizes how to weave a square on the Zoom loom, and I think the coverage is perfect: Does it explain everything you ever wanted to know about pin loom weaving? No, but it is sufficient and clear to get the beginner going who is eager to “get to the good part” of making a crew member, and it is not annoyingly long to the more experienced weaver who just wants to skip ahead.

Chapter 2 is a treasure trove, because here is where Deborah explains techniques. I was very surprised when I first noticed that EVERYTHING in this book is made using only the 4” Schacht Zoom loom!

The chapter starts with some basic joining techniques (to get the job done, hurray!) followed by step-by-step instructions on how to manipulate square shapes, again accompanied by excellent photography. She calls it “folding, rolling, and other techniques” and it is very eye opening what you can accomplish that way! This chapter is not only instructive to make the animals in this book, but also serves as inspiration for “what else” you might want to make. It is this chapter that convinced me to add this book to the “Reference” category in my ebook library.

Lastly, there is chapter 3 with instructions for making the crew. I wish Interweave would post a picture of all the projects (fox (2), cat, dog, mouse, penguin, bunny, frog, lion, dino, elephant, and owl) because it is hard to pick a favorite.

I had to chuckle when I started reading the instructions for the fox pillow. Deborah adds life to the crew by naming them and giving each of them a little profile. LOL! It actually made me immediately read about all the other crew members, too.

The instructions are thorough, easy to follow, and come with templates and tips. Nothing else I could ask for.

The yarns suggested in this book are very readily available, affordable, and pin loom proven, like Red Heart Soft, Lion Brand Heartland and Vanna’s Choice. That’s another “get started quickly” plus point, and double that for providing the exact yardage that is needed. Those factors make it very easy to substitute, for example with hand spun.

If I had to choose one favorite, it is the fox pillow, because that is something not just for little people. I think this will look great on a teenagers bed in a dorm. Or the bunny, because it is sooo cuddly! Or the frog purse for a little girl. Or the lion blankie to welcome a new baby. (Yes, under normal circumstances I can count to one.)

Tip: Since it works for 4”, you can make the designs smaller or larger by using different sized looms. I will make the bunny using a 6” loom, so that there is more to cuddle!

I’ve been thinking about anything negative to say about this book, to keep a little balance … but that turns out to be a challenge. I would love to be able to put a physical copy of this book on the shelf, next to my other pin loom books. I still like to look at and use "real" books. But for the content, instruction and presentation … this book is a treat for anyone who is interested in pin loom weaving. Period.

I’m waiting for more.

The ideas and presentation of the patterns are excellent. However, I don't like the ebook format. This would have worked much better as a soft cover or spiral bound book. For that reason alone I have to give a poor rating to this ebook. Review by Christine (Posted on 3/12/2018)
