Summer & Winter Towels Kit

Summer and winter is a traditional weave long known for its use in Early American two-color coverlets; predominantly dark on one side and light on the other. In Summer & Winter: A Weave for all Seasons, author Donna Sullivan discusses a way to thread four blocks on only four shafts. The result is a surprisingly complex cloth that yields intriguing secondary patterns and textures.

Rotating colors in the warp, patter weft, and tabby weft allows innumerable variations. These five towels show just a few of the many ways the colors can be combined. In the first towel, the weft colors rotate in the same order as the warp. In the second, each weft color combines with each warp color. The third towel employs one color (Duck) consistently as either a tabby weft or pattern weft. In the fourth towel, one color (Kiwi) is used as a pattern weft throughout, and in the fifth towel, a nonwarp color (Dusty Blackberry) is introduced as pattern weft in every block. The possibilities of color interaction seem limitless, and are all guaranteed to make you wish your warp were longer!
