Spin-Off Presents: Essentials of Drumcarding

Besides a spinning wheel (or even including a spinning wheel!), a drumcarder is the biggest investment many spinners make. Whether you’re borrowing one or you’ve invested in a carder of your very own, congratulations! Most spinners say that their drumcarders are their most treasured non-wheel possessions. And whether you’re starting out with your own carder or are borrowing one, our new eBook will get you off on the right foot. Your new friend needs proper care and feeding to work properly and crank out lovely batts for years to come.

Spin-Off Presents: Essentials of Handcarding

Looking for a way to build on your carding skills? This eBook was designed with you in mind! With these articles from some of Spin-Off’s most distinguished contributors, you can turn your carding experience from confusing to confident. Find basic step-by-step directions to make batts, rolags, and rovings with handcards. Learn to break in your handcards so they’ll work better than ever. Discover techniques for carding cotton that will make spinning it a pleasure.

Spin-Off Presents: Combing, A Spinner's Guide

Wool combs deserve a healthy measure of respect—and not just because they are sharp and weighty. It’s a big step to go from spinning commercially prepared top to making your own. But as you will discover, there is no substitute for the pleasure of spinning hand-combed top. With this collection of articles from some the most distinguished contributors in Spin-Off’s history, you can break down that step from daunting to completely doable. You can build your skills with small and inexpensive equipment such as minicombs, flickers, and even dog brushes, or dive right in with hackles and full-sized wool combs. (On second thought, no diving around the wool combs.)

How to Card Wool
with Carol Rhoades, Maggie Casey, Norman Kennedy and Rita Buchanan
Video Download

Carding is the first step toward consistent, easy-to-spin woolen yarns, and hand cards are the most accessible tool for achieving them. But how to produce those  fluffy, lofty, spinnable rolags? There are many schools of thought. In this DVD, you’ll see four master spinners share their techniques and tricks, ranging from deeply traditional to somewhat eccentric. They all work. You’ll also enjoy bonus content with Andrea Mielke Shroer and Narcissa Venigas Perez, a spinner in the Oaxacan highlands.

Combing Fiber
with Robin Russo
Video Download

Wool combing is a little alarming to the novice – swinging heavy implements with long, needle-sharp teeth can be hazardous. Yet this method of preparation produces the most wonderfully organized, fluffy, silky fiber imaginable. In this workshop, Robin Russo covers the basics and much, much more.

Customer Reviews (2)
The "Combing: A Spinners Guide" was the reason I bought this package and it is an excellent video, not only does it give you a run down of the various types of combs available on the market today (although some appear to be only available in the US - so beware of import tax) an example of all the different types of combs are seen in use and their strong points explained.

The "How to Card Wool" was I felt rather less useful, fine if you are completely new to hand carding, but rather belaboured most points and could cause confusion to the new carder as the four spinners did not hold identical views.

I don't think that the eBooks added much to the two digital downloads except that it offers some assistance with drum carding.

For a thorough grasp of the different methods of preparing wool for spinning or felting, I would recommend this package. For £24 it is wonderful value for money.

Good value and very helpful
At the sale price of $29.99, this package is good value. A warning: the ebooks are collections of published Spin-Off articles, so for those who have the whole collection they might not be worth it. However, for those like me who don't want every Spin-Off edition ever published, it's helpful to have these articles collected in one place (well, three places!). I noticed that Interweave has priced these ebooks at just under $10, possibly in response to the many negative comments they've had from customers about their habit of pricing short ebooks of reprints in the $15 range.

As with the articles, the video on hand carding is *mostly* excerpts from existing spinning videos, showing the hand-carding section. I found this useful. I have the Rita Buchanan video already so I recognised that bit. But I was able to watch Maggie Casey's technique as well, and I believe the lengthy section with Carol Rhoades is completely unique to this video. It's very helpful; she gives lots of useful tips. I loved Norman Kennedy and watching him card has inspired me to get his videos as well, I like his style. The only gripe I have (and the reason for only four stars), is that in the brief section by Andrea Mielke Schoerer, where she gives useful information on how to 'tune up' a hand card before using it, there isn't more information on how she cards. I've never seen anyone transfer wool the way she does and have been watching the relevant 9 seconds over and over. I would have loved to see her demonstrate this in more detail.

Robin Russo's video on combing is great and was on my wish list. I bought this package to help me learn about wool prep and decide on what tools to buy to start with; it's great on both counts and I'm very pleased. It's nice to have all this information in one place and so easy to access.
