What if there was a way to create a ball of yarn directly on your drop spindle that is ready for plying? You can, with a Turkish spindle! Join expert Amelia Garripoli to learn all about these fascinating, beautiful tools. Turkish spindles are great for spinners on the go: they have no hook to bend by accident, and you'll have a ready ball of yarn once the spindle is full.

In this workshop, you'll learn about the different parts of a Turkish drop spindle and how the balanced arms (in place of the usual spindle whorl) provide a framework for a beautiful ball of yarn. Master the basics of creating a half-hitch, drafting, and winding on to the spindle to create beautiful (and practical) yarn bundles. Then learn Amelia's expert tips for beginners and how to troubleshoot your spinning. Learn the best way to store your spindle for travel so it stays beautiful and intact and how to put your spindle at rest without losing twist.

Finally, you'll tackle plying and have the opportunity to take a peek at Amelia's large and varied Turkish spindle collection. Discover the differences between Turkish spindles and choose the right one for you. Amelia will even teach you how to make a functioning spindle out of colored pencils!

You'll have so much fun exploring the composition, history, techniques, and benefits of using a Turkish spindle; it's sure to become one of your favorite spinning tools.

Very good explanation
Rating
This was an excellent introduction to Turkish spindling. Amelia gives clear, well paced instructions, the camera work is good. I would have preferred a bit more on drafting so I would recommend Maggie Casey's 'Beginning on a drop spindle' to accompany this. This is an excellent overall explanation of using the Turkish spindle. Review by Alison (Posted on 6/8/2018)
Good intro to this style of spinning
Rating
This is an odd little video. Maybe it's been heavily edited? Amelia explains a lot of things spindle spinners would already know, such as joining fibre and how to hold fibre while spinning. But this video doesn't seem to be aimed at newbie spinners, as things like draft and park and how to get your spindle spinning nicely aren't covered at all.
I found this video a bit overwhelming as a newbie, but coming back to it later I picked up some great tips, like fast plying and a different way of joining. The video clearly shows everything Amelia does and she demonstrates things at a good pace.

Excellent overview
I'd watched several YouTube videos on using a Turkish spindle, but this one was more comprehensive (from assembling the spindle and attaching the fiber, to handling the spindle and winding on, to how to stop without losing the twist) and much more clear. She explained clearly step-by-step, and the video itself focused on her hands so that it was easy to see what she was doing as she talked about it. I picked up a number of useful pointers, and I am gradually getting more satisfied with my results as I practice. My one complaint is that although the video is broken into logical segments, there is no upfront index that allows quick access to a particular topic for review. However, the overall quality is such that I still rate it as a 5-star. Review by Dot2 (Posted on 8/18/2016)
