Spaced and Felted Scarf
Pattern by Stephanie Flynn Sokolov

When you look at this scarf on your rigid heddle loom, you'll find it hard to believe that it's the same fabric as the finished piece shown here. The final scarf is impressive, but it's really (really!) quite easy to achieve these results. A fine wool-silk blend space-dyed yarn is used for warp and weft. The sett is 12 epi with spaces left unthreaded in the heddle as well as spacers inserted during the weaving. The beautiful pattern is acheived in part by the spaces in the warp. The fabric is felted by hand, transforming a loose, open weave to a woven grid that holds its shape and remains soft and flexible.

  • Structure: Plain Weave
  • Equipment: 15" wide, 12-dent rigid heddle reed; one stick shuttle; spacers of varying widths
  • Warp Length: 120", which includes 24" for loom waste
  • Finished Size: 8" wide and 80" long

Woven Scarves
by Jane Patrick and Stephanie Flynn Sokolov

In addition to the Spaced and Felted Scarf pattern the Woven Scarves book offers a collection of 25 scarves and variations that will range in complexity for all skill levels.

Jane Patrick and Stephanie Flynn Sokolov introduce weavers to a broad sampling of weaving techniques and exploring various ways of creating cloth on a rigid heddle loom in their book Woven Scarves. Each chapter begins with an explanation of a particular technique: plain weave; using yarn to its best advantage; various weave structures; altering the surface of woven fabric.
