As holiday symbols go, Peter Rabbit is one of the more recognizable. The little fellow and his friends have been incorporated into Easter sewing for generations. We simply had to make him part of an issue where classics are front and center. The iconic fellow along with French sewn finery and pretty seasonal pastels come together to inspire spectacular Easter sewing. So many of you have been asking for more traditional, vintage look, lace-trimmed heirlooms that inspired the very first issues of Sew Beautiful magazine. Designer Mela Wilson has turned that style of sewing into a successful enterprise. She learned heirloom techniques at a very young age, and now her work is sold in her showrooms across America. We were delighted to visit and spend a day with her in Mobile, Alabama where we captured her beautiful heirloom clothing for this issue’s designer profile.

Our heirloom offerings also includes tips and techniques for sewing with lace. Patty Smith shares her methods for ensuring your lacework comes out perfectly. Andrea Birkan uses lace scraps to create the Timeless Lace Heirloom Blouse, an easy and inexpensive way to add femininity to your wardrobe. In Elegant Bonnet Embellishments, Jan Moore shows you how to attach silk ribbon streamers and rosettes to a selection of adorable bonnets; they’re perfect for baby’s first Easter.

For our hand smockers we couldn’t resist re-introducing Gwen Milner’s Peter Cottontail. The plate has been out of print for some time, but it’s ever a classic, so Gwen revised it exclusively for Sew Beautiful readers. A button-on suit smocked with this seasonal design would be an adorable outfit for your little lad to wear in a portrait with the Easter Bunny. No time to smock? We found a precious vintage suit that reminded us of the familiar waistcoat and vest worn by Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit and turned it into a free pattern in this issue. It works up so quickly, you’ll want to make one in all sorts of different colors and fabrications.
