Heart in Hand: Buff Mittens for a Child to Knit Kit

Buff knitting is a regional technique for knitting a shagged carpetlike fabric, specifically for work mittens, and was revived by Annis Holmes in her book Buff Knitting for the Family, in 1993. Loops of extra yarn are worked into the knit stitches and then later cut and matted, creating a thick, warm, and waterproof work mitten originally knitted for teamsters and loggers, but now available for children!

Included in this kit:

Heart in Hand: Buff Mittens for a Child by Joanna Johnson
Pattern included in the PieceWork Jan/Feb Issue

Use the buff stitch to knit a pair of wool mittens for a little one. Thick and warm buff mittens were historically worn by hardworking mountain men. Designer Joanna Johnson has turned them into a delight for a child.
 PieceWork, January/February 2016
Magazine Single Issue

This tenth annual historical knitting issue includes the amazing story of the “So-Called St. Adalbert’s Glove from Prague”—a mystery rolled up in a knitting lesson. Mimi Seyferth’s article “The Women of Pindos” puts the spotlight on a group of women during the war who went way beyond knitting, although they did knit countless pairs of socks, sweaters, balaclavas, and mittens. And these are just two examples of what’s in store for you in this issue.
