Knitwear designer, author, and technical editor Kate Atherley will show you how to create a good pattern, and turn it into a GREAT pattern.
In this Online Workshop you’ll:
- Understand the parts of a pattern, their function, and how to organize them: introductory text, notes, sidebars, charts, and tutorials, as well as the actual instructions themselves.
- Learn how to make your pattern stand out from the crowd and create key selling points.
- Communicate what knitters can expect from your patterns, and what you expect from them, for the best knitting experience.
- Examine a variety of pattern-writing styles, and learn why a style sheet is so important.
- Manage stitch instructions, charts, and schematics with ease.
- Understand the supporting roles of test knitters, sample knitters, and tech editors—and whether or not you need them.

Skill Level: Intermediate & up. Students should possess at least basic knitting skills, be interested in design, and have familiarity with written knitting instructions and charts.
Materials Required: Notebook and pen.

About the instructor:
Kate Atherley is a mathematician and refugee from the technology industry. She works as the Lead Technical Editor for Knitty magazine as well as a designer and the author of Knit Mitts, Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet, Beyond Knit & Purl, The Beginner’s Guide to Writing Knitting Patterns, as well as the Online Workshops Math for Knitters, Find Your Fit: Understanding & Altering Knitting Patterns, andFixing Knitting Mistakes. She teaches regularly near her home in Ontario and at national and international events.
