PieceWork January/February 2011

Digital Magazine

The 5th annual historical knitting issue of PieceWork magazine explores the tradition of knitting from Turkey to the White House!

This issue also spans across four centuries, from the seventeenth century’s Gunnister stockings to contemporary Swedish knitters who embrace the traditional technique of two-end knitting.

Included in this issue is the knitted Orenburg Snowflake Scarf by Galina A. Khmeleva. This beautiful scarf was inspired by the lace knitters of Orenburg.

Included in PieceWork January/February 2011

The lace knitters of Orenburg historically have embraced the Snowflake (Snezhinka) design as one of their most treasured motifs. The Snowflake motif may be found in almost every piece of lace produced in this region, typically in the inner border of a five-diamond or medallion shawl.

In this variation of the Snowflake motif, diagonals are used as the featured basic element. Small diamonds, also made from the diagonal basic element, surround each snowflake.

The finished size of the scarf is about 2 yards (2 m) long and 9 inches (23 cm) wide; 11 diamond reps; about 872 yards (797 m) of yarn total; each pattern rep requires about 67 yards (61 m) of yarn.

The Original Fiber Fantasy Blockers Kit

Don't use a million pins when you block! Just insert these stainless steel, rust-proof blocking wires along the edge of your unfinished pieces.

The Blockers stop the curling so you can easily pin and steam to your desired measurement. Blockers act as a handle for every edge of your knitted piece. No longer will you need to pin every inch unsatisfactorily "scalloping" the edge of your knitted piece.

Blockers kit includes more than enough to do a sweater or shawl: 8-(36")and 4-(18") stiff Blockers, 2-(27") flexible Blockers (for sleeve caps and armholes), 30 T-pins and a yardstick for measuring. Blocking instructions are included.
