Mesa Verde (Spanish for green table) is the largest archaeological site in the United States. Mesa Verde National Park was created in 1906 by Theodore Roosevelt to preserve the numerous cliff dwellings and village ruins of the indigenous Ancient Pueblo people. The cliff dwellings in the park are built within natural-colored rock and adobe structures blend almost seamlessly into the cliffs, topped by the green sage-covered flat mesa above them.

Finished Size: About 38-1/2" (98 cm) at widest point with ends curved and 14"(35.5 cm) long.
Yarn: Fingering weight (#1 Super Fine).
Specific Yarn Used: The Fibre Company Canopy Fingering (50% baby alpaca, 30% merino, 20% viscose bamboo; 200 yd/1 3?4 oz [50 g]): Wild Ginger (MC), 1 skein; Conifer (CC), 1 skein.
Needles: Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) 24" (60 cm) long circular (cir) needle. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Tapestry needle.
Gauge: 18 sts and 351?2 rows = 4" (10 cm) over patt after blocking.

Notes: It is very important to work the slipped stitches along the edges LOOSELY in this pattern. The slipped stitches help create a soft curved upper edge and give the shawl its unique shape. Pulling too firmly on these stitches will not allow the shawl to block easily, so err on the side of too loose versus too tight. When slipping the edge stitches on wrong side (even-numbered) rows, always slip the stitch with the yarn held in the front. When slipping stitches for the tex-tured striped sections, always slip the stitch with the yarn held in front (on the right side of the work). You may choose to LOOSELY strand the unused color along the right-hand edge. If you do that, be sure to twist the yarns every other row to catch the loose strand of the unused yarn along the edge.
