Spin-Off Digital Magazine Summer 2015
Digital Issue

The Spin-Off Magazine Summer 2015 digital issue puts myths under scrutiny to see which are true, which are partly true, and which have no basis in fact. With a number of challenging projects and articles that cover weaving with handspun, spinning thick yarns, and the relationship between crimp and fiber diameter, unlock the truth behind the myths of spinning.

Lobster Pot Scarf Pattern by Stephanie Flynn Sokolov
Included in Spin-Off Magazine Summer 2015 Digital Issue

The most satisfying part of designing with yarn is experimenting with different fibers and concepts. This project uses a 60/40 blend of Merino and flax. Adding Merino to any blend is like adding bacon: it just makes it better. Merino, being soft and long-stapled, and flax, having body and length, pair up as perfect partners. They are a surprising pair, and their rarity as companions may have a historic root: they are not kosher.

  • Equipment: Rigid-heddle loom, 8" weaving width; 12-dent heddle; 1 stick shuttle.
  • Setts: Warp 12 epi; weft 10 ppi.
  • Finished Size: after washing about 7" x 71" including 5½" fringe on each end.

Silk Stainless Steel ½ oz. cone in Fuscia
from Habu Textiles

Like linen or wool stainless steel yarns, the core is stainless steel and silk is wrapped around it. Because of the stainless steel, there is a memory in the yarn.

60/40 Handpaint-Wool Flax 2 oz. Bundle in Lobster
from Spunky Eclectic

The 60/40 Handpaint-Wool Flax is a really unique spin of Merino wool and flax blended together. The fiber is put up in pencil thin sliver. It spins up like a rougher wool but once you wash and give it a small beating its got a lovely drape like linen.

Digital not best
Rating
Ordered many items over the years and was severely dissapointed to also receive this kit with no pattern/copy of Spin-Off. While I am sure there are those that like digital only copies, not all of us want them, or can use them. When contacted for assistance, was essentially told "too bad". When I purchase a book for my reference, I want- and need- a physical copy, when I buy a copy of the magazine the same is true. There was NO option to receive a physical copy of the pattern/magazine. Will NOT buy any kit or product that is "digital only". Review by Fibers Lady (Posted on 2/1/2017)
pattern?
I thought by ordering the kit I would also receive the pattern and now I have the lovely wool and thread but no pattern. If it is only available in the magazine, then I have not received that either.
