Knitting Magazines: Our Best Keeps Getting Better

Join us at Maker Festivals Colorado, the ultimate crafting extravaganza in Loveland from April 10-13, 2024, where the beloved Yarn Fest evolves with an exciting addition of beads and jewelry artists!

We admit it: we love the knitting magazines we publish. Finding constant crafting inspiration in Interweave Knits and knitscene is something we look forward to for ourselves – but mostly, for you. Over recent years, the design aesthetic associated with both of these magazines has evolved into the fresh, fun, and gorgeous. Five of our editorial staff members have chosen their favorites from the past three years. If you are not familiar with the chosen issue, you can always order up a copy. Or, subscribe and never miss an issue of knitscene or Interweave Knits. We don’t want you to miss our best!

Interweave Knits Winter 2017

Sarah Rothberg, Editorial Assistant

Just about a year and a half ago I got to see my first Interweave Knits photo shoot. The projects were more beautiful and elaborate than I imagined knitting could achieve. They looked so modern, professional, sleek, and unique. It was a far different image from the sweaters I saw Molly Weasley make for her kids in Harry Potter. I credit that moment for my passion to knit, it was equal parts inspiring and intimidating and it was only my first week on the job. I didn’t even know a knit from a purl stitch, but I was determined to learn this mystical art.

This moment is only half of why this issue is my overall favorite. The other is that I want to make just about everything in it. This is a rarity for me, considering I am not knitting sweaters yet. The cabled story featuring both women’s garments and menswear is so tempting I am almost able to surmount my fear of knitting a sweater. And the wedding story projects have me tempted to knit them without a wedding anywhere in sight.

knitscene spring 2017

Two words: Power. Knits. Power knits are hardworking garments for hardworking women, and they are the reason that knitscene Spring 2017 is my favorite issue of the magazine. The issue features 8 patterns that say, “Hey, look at me, I can work hard and play hard,” and anyone who makes or receives one of these garments should feel quite empowered. From the many knitting magazines I could have selected over the past three years, this issue stands out due to power-knitted vests, sweaters, cardigans, and tops that are poised and sophisticated. Yet, each of these projects has enough sass to stop anyone in their tracks.

knitscene Fall 2015

Rachel Koon, Managing Editor

I love every magazine we make, but one of my all-time favorites is knitscene Fall 2015. This 10th anniversary issue is packed with 22 gorgeous projects, including some personal favorites: Mari Chiba’s Solitude Jacket, Cecily Glowik MacDonald’s Hyannis Port Pullover, and Annie Watts’s Oddity Scarf. The issue also features a brioche tutorial and a couple of stunning projects that use this über-trendy technique, so whether you’re brand-new to brioche or an experienced brioche knitter looking for a challenge, you’ll find the perfect project to showcase your skills.

knitscene Winter 2016

Hannah Baker, knitscene Editor

One of my favorite issues from the past few years is knitscene Winter 2016. I’ve knitted my own Banquet Sweater and Celebration Shawl from the issue, which was unexpected because I very rarely knit lace—but these projects were so fun! The photography evokes exactly what I love about wintertime: fun, fancy parties that make great excuses to get dressed up, balanced with relaxing snow days filled with warm, cozy knits and activities.

Interweave Knits Fall 2017

Meghan Babin, Interweave Knits Editor

What do you get when you combine knitting and Walt Whitman? Interweave Knits Fall 2017: The Americana Issue. As I am a huge book nerd, using my favorite poet as the inspiration for this issue was completely self-indulgent. Fortunately, Whitman’s influence imbued the pages and projects with the pioneering, unsinkable spirit of America. The updated-classic knits in this issue have already made their way onto my needles, the first being the Angelina Pullover by Mary Anne Benedetto. Next in line: The Astral Road Ruana by Cheryl Toy!
