  • Knife Edge Shuttle in Rosewood from Hokett Would Work
  • Weaving Cards - Item #SL2550 from Schacht
  • Tablet Weaving Made Easy with John Mullarkey, DVD
  • Double-Faced Tablet Weaving with John Mullarkey, DVD
Highlights of this kit:
  • Talk about portability! To get started tablet weaving all you need is yarn and the set of included weaving cards from Schacht. That’s it! No giant floor loom needed, so you can take your weaving anywhere.
  • Card weaving doesn’t mean simple patterns. In fact, you can weave complex patterns that would normally require a lot of shafts on a floor loom with just your cards! Think of it as having a floor loom that fits in your pocket.
  • You’ll get a gorgeous, hand-crafted Rosewood knife edge shuttle designed exclusively for Interweave by Jim Hokett. Jim’s shuttles are not just aesthetically pleasing; they’re high-quality as well. And the knife edge of this shuttle will really help you pack the weft tighter than a standard belt shuttle. Bottom line – easy weaving!
  • There’s no better way to learn how to card weave than one on one time with the best card weaving instructor out there. With this kit, you’ll get two DVDs from John Mullarkey. That’s over 4 hours of instruction!
  • The included weaving cards from Schacht make tablet weaving easy. The colored edges and other labeling on the cards make it easy to keep track of what position each card is in so you’re less likely to make mistakes and you can focus more on weaving wonderful, beautiful bands.
Stripes, chevrons, and diagonal lines all seem pretty basic. But imagine being able to combine these patterns and more to create your own beautiful, complex patterns without having to use a floor loom! In fact, with Just Add Thread: The Ultimate Card Weaving Kit you can do it with just the included shuttle, cards, and your yarn.

I learned a lot with these videos and, yet, it was just missing so much basic information. This is ONLY a good video set if you're weaving on an inkle loom. The author emphasized how little equipment you need to get started. Then proceeded to show you how warp an inkle loom. Great! Except I don't have an inkle loom and I'm not sure how I'd make this work without one. There was no explanation on how to do this without the inkle loom. Big disappointment for me.

Many of the explanations are a little sketchy. For example he shows how to correct a mistake by "splicing." I had to watch the video 6 times before I figured how he was doing it. He never tells you he's reached under and grabbed the bottom threads and knotted them. The double weave video he mentions several times how it's important the background cards are turned in one direction, the pattern cards in the opposite direction. Never tells me why. Many of the double weave instructions made no sense to me -- "you can see how these cards are leaning" -- no they didn't appear to be leaning to me so I never understood the rest of that part because it was important for me to understand the "lean."

So right now, having not attempted card weaving, I feel like I've learned quite a lot, but I didn't learn what I wanted to know (how to do this with almost no equipment) and now feel like I have to go buy an inkle loom to get started and I'm a little peeved about that.
