Do you love the patterns of the ancient Japanese dyeing technique, but don't know where to start?

Itajime is a form of shibori dyeing that uses clamped shapes to create a resist. Traditional itajime dyeing was accomplished with wooden blocks tied to the cloth with string. Now, the shapes are made from Plexiglas and held in place with C-clamps (available at your local hardware store). The shapes prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric, creating distinctive patterns on cloth.

This kit includes everything you need to get started to make 3 yards of Itajime fabric:

  • Welcome to the Fold - Itajime Shibori
  • Prepared-for-dyeing fabric, 3 yards
  • Procion ® MX indigo dye
  • 12 sets of acrylic resist shapes
  • Soda ash fixative
  • Synthropol detergent
  • Gloves and safety mask
  • Complete instructions for itajime dyeing
  • The Surface Designer's Handbook (eBook) by Holly Brackman - This is a comprehensive handbook that delves into the art of dyeing and surface design in extensive detail. It is a must-have resource for anyone interested in patterning cloth.

Plus, a copy of Quilting Arts Holiday Magazine, featuring lots of gift giving ideas, including a project that uses Itajime dyed fabric
