For some knitters, knitting a sweater without step-by-step instructions is intimidating; for others, following instructions is tedious. Knitting in the Old Way by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts and Deb Robson (2004, Nomad Press) is for knitters who fall somewhere in between. Taking the books approach enough information for the basis of dozens of sweaters, but the freedom to choose yarn, gauge, finished size, and stitch or color pattern, Ann Budd designed this classic pullover.

Finished Size: 44" (112 cm) chest/bust circumference.
Needles: Body and sleeves: Size 9 (5.5 mm): 24" (60-cm) circular (cir) and set of 4 or 5 double pointed (dpn).
Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rnds

An "exploded" gusset makes a traditional gansey totally modern. In the Eastbound Sweater, the designer has placed the underarm gussets very low on the body and increased their width substantially throughout the lower body. Doing so creates a wide upper body, which, combined with the drop shoulder sleeve shape, makes for a roomy and modern dolman silhouette. All the elements of traditional ganseys are here- they've just been reinterpreted!

Finished Size: 38 (41, 45, 48, 55)" waist circumference. Sweater shown measures 38", modeled with 4½" of positive ease.
Needles: Sizes 8 (5 mm) and 9 (5.5 mm): 16", 24" and 32" circulars (cir).br> Notions: Markers (m); stitch holders.
Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rows = 4" in St st on larger needle.

This designer discovered the primitive colorwork motifs for this sweater - an animal figure, a flower, and a snowflake set within an allover trellis background - in a 1960s knitting magazine. By combining the motifs with brown and beige wool-camel hair yarn, which has a bit of an old-fashioned effect, and a roomy silhouette, which is contemporary, she created an up-to-date sweater with a vintage fashion feeling.

Finished Size: 34 1/2 (38 1/2, 42 1/2, 46 1/2, 50 1/2, 54 1/2, 58 1/2)" chest circumference.
Needles: Size 9 (5.5 mm): 32" circular (cir) needle and set of double-pointed needles (dpn).
Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rows = 4" in St st.
