A Word From the Author:

For me, with art or with food, I generally start out with a recipe or an idea and then somewhere along the way deviate into another direction. I am providing you with both techniques and projects. The book is divided into sections: Color, Texture, Layers, Flavors and Combinations. You can read straight through or skip around however you wish. Throughout the book, you will see sidebars titled What's in Your Pantry? These are designed to offer options regarding substitutions and variations for the projects. Much like cooking, mixed media offers ample opportunity to experiment, and I find that I often get my best results when I deviate from the socalled "recipe.'" — Mary Beth Shaw

Flavors:
When I think of flavor—and I'm talking about swoonproducing flavor—words like luscious or succulent come to mind. I recall the first time I had molten chocolate cake many, many years ago before it became mainstream (and a dietary staple); a perfectly poached egg on top of organic baby spinach; lemon curd on a delicate, flaky scone. But alas . . . I'm not here to talk about food at the moment.

I am talking about flavor as in style or mood or voice. For instance, Claudine Hellmuth's work is widely recognized in mixed media circles; she has established a look (or flavor) that is instantly known. My "Common Denominator' series has a flavor. Our guest artists Deb Trotter and Heather Haymart also have a flavor, as do many of the other artists featured in this book. Flavor, as I'm using the word, relates to voice. It can be difficult to find your artist voice, and the best advice I could give is to make lots and lots of art, all the time, every day. Then one day you will look up and realize you have a voice that is all your own.

To start our flavor exploration, we will limit our work to rigid substrates. I will offer up some very diverse techniques that will hopefully send you into tasty explorations of your own.
