Weaving is one of the oldest textile arts in the world and the ancient traditions can still be found today in many different cultures and regions.

One region that boasts some beautiful weaving traditions and textiles is in the Andes. The Elder master weavers in Peru create items by hand that contain so much detail, color, patterning, and complexity, that it’s hard to believe it’s done in the humblest of manners. The yarn is spun on drop spindles, often while tending a flock of sheep or herd of alpacas and llamas, or while letting food cook over a stove or fire. The weaving is done on a back-strap loom that can be easily toted where they need to go. Their simple practices of spinning and weaving are to be admired as much as the finished products the weavers of the Andes produce.

Nilda Callanuapa Alvarez and Christine Franquemont take you on an adventure to experience these world renowned textiles in Faces of Tradition: Weaving Elders of the Andes.

The lives of the people featured in this book would be called simple in the eyes of a modern, urban, city dweller. They spend their days farming, shepherding, cooking, spinning, and weaving. They don’t drive fancy cars or live in expensive houses. But they do carry traditions that they pass along to generation to generation, traditions that can’t be copied by modern technology to the breadth or beauty that they perform them.

In this book, you will meet many people from various locations in Peru. You will learn about their day to day lives and the importance textiles play. With stunning photography that takes you into the heart and soul of these regions, you will feel like you have traveled thousands of miles to experience the weaving traditions of the Andes.
