When Carol Rhoades first saw Anu Kotli's knitted Estonian hand puppets, she thought how beautiful they'd be in handspun yarn. The result was this collaboration.

Finished Size: 9 ½" tall and 10" circumference.
Fiber: Each puppet uses 2 ¼ ounces Shetland wool pin-drafted roving (obtained from Julie Guilette, Bramble Wool Farm, 265 Truway Rd., Luxemburg, WI 54217; www.sawmat.com). The flock's colors are Shetland black, dark moorit, gray, and white (the white is 11 percent angora).
Yarn: About 1 ounce each of two contrasting colors of 2-ply Shetland, 88 yards per ounce, 15 wraps per inch. Also small amounts of yarn for embroidering features and 1/3 ounce waste yarn (raveled knitting works well) for stuffing head.
Yarn weight: #0 - Lace
Gauge: 8 sts and 9 rows = 1".
Needles: Set of 5 double-pointed needles, U.S. size 0 or size to obtain gauge; tapestry needle for embroidery.

Needs rewritten
This pattern is only rough instructions. There is no consideration given to stitch counts and flow. The puppets are darling but this pattern is not a pattern in the traditional sense. I think if rewritten and remarketed many copies could be sold. As written the knitter is largely on her own to pick and piece parts of the instructions. Review by Lori (Posted on 9/27/2016)
Love the result!
I happened to start with the one with fewest stitches, and had to guess much of the pattern as only the 3 others was written down.
It ended ok, and was much admired.

Love it !
Loved knitting this pattern. Found the face embroidery a little tricky to get right, but I used YouTube videos to get technique advice on how to embroider faces. Review by KnittyNita (Posted on 6/10/2014)
Wonderful puppets!
I just love the look of these puppets! I am working on my first puppet now and I am finding it quite challenging - but I am not a very experienced knitter, so others may find it easier to follow. I hope to make several for my children and as gifts to friends. Review by Catherine Knox (Posted on 5/17/2010)
