- This is a fun, easy, well written and quick to make pattern, and my first attempt at a seamless top down. I think it will be hard to go back to a pieced and seamed garment!. It's fun to watch grow because of the stripes and has just enough interest to keep it from being boring, but is still a good TV knit. Here are my suggestions, having made it using a worsted/DK self striping wool (which was fine, but not ideal for the look of the garment--I just didn't want to spring for the Noro until I knew if I liked and could fit the sweater to me perfectly first). The pattern is written using Noro's Silk Garden, which is probably a more ideal yarn for this pattern than the worsted wool I used. First of all, Noro's stripes are not quite as solid--they have a heathered effect, so even when you get to the larger stripes on the sleeves, the difference between the narrow stripes on the body and the wide on the sleeve is not so obvious. Also, if you knit it in a bulkier, more "solid" yarn like a worsted or DK, I would recommend lengthening the sleeves to full length as the bulkier yarn looks sort of silly or even clunky in 3/4 length. So, I would really think about the type of striped yarn you buy, especially if you are making it in a medium or large size--the stripes are much wider on the sleeves than the body due to knitting in the round. I got the shaping perfect, so I'm now ready to try it again in a pricier yarn with confidence. I think this would be great in a cotton, cotton linen, or a thinner yarn like mohair that is thin but still makes gauge. Ready for my next shot at it!. (Posted on 11/11/2011)
