Imagine being able to weave overshot along the length of your cloth with just one shuttle, or being able to weave terry cloth towels for your bath. All this and more is possible by using a supplementary warp. It used to be thought that you needed a supplementary warp beam to get all this new design potential, but with Deb Essen’s technique you can weave with a supplementary warp without having to buy a new loom!

In this book, Deb walks you through warping the loom with a supplementary warp with clear instructions and full-color photographs of each step. You’ll also learn how to turn a 2-shuttle draft to make it a 1-shuttle supplementary warp draft as well as her tips and techniques for warping a supplementary draft successfully. Once you’ve got the warping down, weave one of eight projects included in the book. Each project explores a different supplemental warp structure from turned overshot and monk’s belt to Bedford cord and even velvet.

Great introduction to using supplemental warps
I am a new weaver and found this book to be an excellent introduction in using supplemental warps to create a variety of different and interesting weaving patterns. It begins with a clear, concise, and well illustrated overview of how to set up and manage the supplemental warp using basic material that I already had on hand around the house. The projects are interesting and well documented demonstrating a wide variety of cloth including turned overshot, terry-cloth, velvet, and shibori. I would recommend this book to to other new weavers who want to start exploring new techniques. Review by John (Posted on 10/18/2017)
Wonderful, clear, concise directions, great projects and most importantly, gives you tools you need to make your own drafts.
I was thrilled to find this book, just about the time that a customer requested I make a piece with a vertical (warp) overshot pattern stripe rather than horizontal stripe. I had NO idea how to do this - but found this terrific book by Deb Essen. With some trepidation and insecurity about my ability to learn from a book... I took it step by step and with great satisfaction I reached my summer goal of drafting and successfully weaving (so far just a test sample) of an overshot pattern as a vertical stripe. (If you do purchase the book, make sure to ask interweave press for the corrected draft for the overshot shawl project.) I look forward to doing a few more of the projects in this book just for "fun". I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn how to incorporate supplemental warps in their weaving and opening up new design possibilities. Review by Avima (Posted on 8/16/2017)
