Learn how to work with textured fabrics of all kinds to create wall hangings--while balancing color, size, and value to make your design flow smoothly from light to dark, as in so many of Carol's award-winning quilts. Fused assembly makes the process fast and easy and gives you hands-on practice at placing your values in the proper order. After a quick introduction, Carol teaches her technique via a small sample "Arc-i-texture" project. Learn the secrets of couching to enhance your piece, and discover how to create Carol's trademark "perfect" concentric couched circles. Delve even deeper into the design process with a close look at how to incorporate value. And finally, learn Carol's finishing technique using facings rather than bindings, plus a creative approach to sleeves. Carol's simple techniques yield striking results.

So inspiring
I just loved this DVD - enough to watch it over and over again. Carol explains things very well in a short time. However, if there is one thing I took away from this, it's how to couch. I was unfamiliar with the technique before and thought perfect spirals were completely out of my range. Not so with Carol's technique. Inspiring and instructive. Very Good
I have to agree with ALL the reviews posted, including the one who wasn't particularly happy.

Having said that, I'd like to add a few observations which might help you decide whether this video is something you want to purchase.

First, and maybe foremost, this is only a 1 hour video workshop. There is only so much that can be covered in a short amount of time and still be comprehensive, understandable and still maintain your interest.

Although the instructor covers only one basic idea (couching circle spirals on squares/rectangles and couching square spirals on circles) and 2 design approaches (color coordination and value coordination), you need only a bit of imagination to realize her basic technique can be applied in a multitude of ways.

For example, I can imagine couching a randomly and gently curved line across the quilt (horizontally, vertically, diagonally) and then building a simple couched shape off the spine which is in turn echoed.

For a clearer understanding of what I mean, check out Leah Day's Free Motion Quilt Along blogs or YouTube videos. Many of her free motion quilting motifs would transition well to couching and offer many new ideas how to use these techniques.

Art Quilt Design:Strategies for Success
I found this video extremely informative, easy to follow and I was able to create an art quilt on the first try. Author presents herself well and offers tips for design and color application. Review by vicki young sharabura (Posted on 10/5/2011)
Love it!
I purchased this on Friday (video download, no shipping, instant gratification), watched it yesterday (Saturday) and was beyond satisfied! I paid $8.97 for about one hour of instruction. Carol did a fabulous job of explaining everything about her style of art quilts! I know there are a couple of reviewers that were less than satisfied with this particular class, and I also realize that not everyone is expecting the same outcome. But, for me, what makes a great instructor is someone who can take these beautiful quilts and break down the steps in such a way that makes me believe I can achieve the same results! Carol did a fabulous job of explaining why she chooses the different colors and textures she does...that alone would save me a lot of time trying to decide what would make a good composition. Her techniques were so much easier than I expected! Thank you, Carol! I really enjoyed this workshop and cannot wait to try these techniques myself! Review by Anita Van Hal (Posted on 4/17/2011)
Very Good
I got this as a download and felt it was worth it. The instructor stays on track with the work and has plenty of samples at the ready. She takes you from start to finish in detail. Without getting all 'technically art talkish' -- she very simply gives the lesson on what values are and how to make them flow. She demonstrates how to create balance of the values and shows how to get the value distribution to be pleasing to the eye. She is using these principles for one type of project-- but the principles when applied carry to any good composition regardless of media or style. On the surface you learn to make this wall hanging, but in a subliminal way, if you really LOOK at what she's doing-- the lessons that make her style of piece work, are the same lessons that make any good art work captivating. In this video the principles are learned painlessly. If you have a 40 hr a week job and no time for art school-- If you just want to be able to sit down and make something really pretty that you can be proud of-- If you want to pick and choose a variety of mashy beautiful materials that speak to you-- this is a good place to start. Art Quilt Design: Strategies for Success
I have never, ever given a less than satisfactory review of anything. However unfortunately I agree with the previous reviewer, I had expected more. If your interested in an introduction to basic elements and principles of design such as varying size, texture, color and values of shapes you may enjoy this video. In addition she cover the couching and finishing techniques. If you are a fan of Carol Taylor's Arch- series or wish to create similar work you'll probably enjoy this video. Very limited in scope
The workshop description suggests that you will get far more than you do in this video. This workshop teaches you how to make one kind of wall hanging only. It doesn't really offer any strategies for design other than than the single one. I think it was a very misleading description of the product. Review by Todd Peckham (Posted on 11/13/2010)
