Description

Create jewelry that glows in the dark with yooperlite, a fluorescent rock newly discovered in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Materials Needed to Complete this Project:

  • Yooperlite™ cabochon
  • Lapis cabochon
  • 12mm moonstone
  • 22-gauge sterling silver sheet
  • 18″ of 28-gauge 4mm fine silver bezel wire
  • 2″ 2.55mm O.D. sterling silver tubing
  • 9mm I.D. sterling silver jump ring made of 12 ga. wire
  • Four 4mm I.D. jump rings made of 16-gauge wire
  • Hard solder
  • Medium solder
  • 2-part, glow-in-the-dark paint for watch dials
  • Medium SoftFlex cable for beading
  • Beads
  • Crimps

ClaspTools Needed to Complete this Project:

Safety: Ventilation, eye protection, magnification

Design: UV longwave flashlight, natural or manmade components that glow in black light

Hand: Sharpie Pro Permanent Marker with chisel tip, bench pin, sharp scribe, jeweler’s saw with 4/0 blades and lubricant, ring file, acetone, wipes, bench block, hallmarking stamps and chasing hammer, flush cutters, straight edge, fine point black Sharpie, parallel pliers, flexible shaft and handpiece or rotary Dremel tool, salon-style sanding sticks in a variety of grits; ¾″ Moore’s sanding disks in Fine, X Fine and XX Fine grits, 1000-grit sandpaper, jeweler’s chain nose pliers

Soldering: Respirator or soldering ventilation system, 6″x 6″ Solderite soldering board; soldering pick, fine tweezers, air/acetylene Smith Silversmith torch with #0 and #00 tips and tank of fuel, Prips flux in spray bottle, quench, pickle pot and copper tongs, soft absorbent cloth

Finishing: Bench polisher or rotary tool with clean muslin buff and Fabuluster polishing compound for high shine or a crimped brass brush for burnished finish; hot, soapy water and tooth brush, blue painter’s tape

Stone Setting: dental floss, 2-part epoxy, mixing cup, microfine brush, plastic credit card, burnishing tool, acetone and swabs for clean up Beading: Bead board, cutters, crimping tool
