Make a custom cold connected chain design—and the mandrel to produce your links.

Skills: Sawing, Basic plier use

Materials Needed to Complete this Project:

  • 2"x2½" piece copper or brass, any gauge from 24-18
  • Copper practice wire, 18-gauge (optional)
  • 18-gauge silver wire, 6'
  • Liver of sulfur or black patina (optional)
  • 10 18-gauge 4mm ID jump rings (or make your own; see box Make Jump Rings)
  • 1 18-gauge 5mm ID jump ring, soldered (or make your own; see box Make Jump Rings)

Tools Needed to Complete this Project:

  • Hand:
    • Two pairs chain nose pliers or 1 chain nose and one round nose vise or parallel-jaw pliers
    • Permanent marker
  • Power:
    • Buffing machine
    • Tumbler or rotary tool and polishing bit
  • Optional:
    • 4mm mandrel or drill bit 
    • Jeweler’s saw and blade
    • Masking tape
