Description

Materials Needed to Complete This Project:

  • 5-6 oz. (2.0–2.4 mm thick) vegetable tanned leather (standard is cowhide, which I used)
  • Polished cabochon, your choice (I used a 15x20mm malachite)
  • Water-based leather dye/stain in Yellow, Tan, Primary green (Tandy emerald green), Chartreuse, Dark green, Light brown, Medium brown, Dark brown, Dark brown Gel Antique
  • Gold paint (optional)
  • Resist fluid (may also be used as a finish)
  • Leather sheen finish spray
  • Pure neatsfoot oil

Tools Needed to Complete This Project

  • Poly or rawhide mallet or maul
  • Granite slab or any heavy surface that will not absorb your hammer strikes
  • Cutting board
  • Pointed stylus
  • Hole punches
  • Safety skiver
  • X-Acto knife
  • Ball-ended tool
  • Spoon or pointed spoon tool
  • Textured beveler
  • Smooth bevelers
  • Vertically lined pear tools
  • Leather (petal lifter) or a deerfoot tool
  • Triangular stops
  • Teardrop stop
  • Backgrounders
  • Antler tip (helpful but not necessary, great for sculpting and slicking)
  • Edge slicker
  • Narrow awl or a stitching awl
  • Gum tragacanth (matting agent)
  • E6000 or similar glue (you want strong and flexible)
  • Blue painters tape
  • Size 3 edge beveler
  • Spray bottle (option: ProCarve solution to encourage casing and dissuade mold)
  • Tracing film (thin plastic that pressure marks can be made through)
