Estonian knitting is famous for its diaphanous delicacy as well as for its hallmark lily-of-the-valley pattern. In Knitted Lace of Estonia Online Workshop, Nancy Bush introduces you to the history of these shawls and shows you how to knit both traditional and modern versions, including how to get started with the proper tools, cast-on methods, and information on the various shawl types and shaping. You’ll discover how to read a lace chart and work your lace pattern, with tips for calculating your shawl’s center and edgings, and learn various Estonian lace knitting techniques including the classic “nupp,” a simple bobble technique seen throughout Estonian lace. In the workshop itself, Nancy offers instructions for making three styles of the same basic shawl. The workshop also includes downloadable patterns for 3 Estonian lace projects: the sample worked in the course and two additional shawl patterns.

Skill Level: Intermediate and up. Students should know how to knit and purl, and ideally have some prior experience with basic lace and reading charts.

Materials Needs: Lace-weight yarn; locking stitch markers in multiple colors; tapestry needle; blocking mats and pins; Size 3 (3.25 mm) straight and circular knitting needles
