The Fall season is one of abundance and planning for the winter months ahead. We gather nuts in the form of balls of wool to ensure our warmth and to sustain our creativity throughout the bleakness of January. Among the warm days and cool nights of Fall, there are also moments of pause, peace, and reflection. We look back at the work of summer and feel fulfilled. And that, my knitting friends, is the theme for the Fall 2023 issue – Reflections.

Reflections can take on a variety of forms. There is the literal-looking in the mirror-form, from which several of our projects take their inspiration. Debi Maige’s Mim Sweater is a stunning example of the juxtaposition of black and white and mirroring patterns in slip-stitch colorwork. An epic mirrored cable panel is on show in the Cilin Sweater by Australian designer Vera Marcu. The act of reflecting on the past takes hold in several of our classically inspired designs. Evelyn Siatra’s Memoir Cardigan evokes a timeless sensibility in a garment heavy on texture. While Jennifer Kent’s Stack Bond Wrap reminds us of historic subway tiles in an utterly modern way.

Among the 14 projects in this issue, you’ll find two familiar favorites. We’ve revised and updated two classic Interweave patterns with fresh yarn and an expanded size range. You’ll also find a must-read technical article from our own Sandi Rosner that explains the construction of various popular sweater styles. You’ll finally know what the differences are between a drop shoulder and a modified drop shoulder. For our Maker’s Tools, we’re dusting off a few forgotten treasures. These are products from companies who have been a staple in our community for years-we love them so. And lastly, our Ravelngs this issue tells us of a family with a tradition in wool.
