Description

Create this unique pendant featuring gravel components and a freshwater pearl.

Skills: Stone slabbing and cabbing, Sawing, Pick soldering and Stone setting

Materials Needed to Complete this Project:

  • Two pieces of gravel about 1.5” across
  • 2”x2” sheet of 22g sterling silver
  • 3” of 2mm bezel wire
  • 3” of 3mm bezel wire
  • Hard and medium solder
  • 14-20g round sterling silver wire
  • Half-drilled freshwater pearl
  • Blue painters tape
  • 2-part epoxy
  • Chain and clasp
  • Tools Needed to Complete this Project:

    Lapidary:

  • Safety glasses
  • Rock saw
  • Flat lap with 180, 360, 1200, and 3000-grit diamond plates
  • Flat lap polishing pad
  • Cerium oxide and water
  • Dop sticks, metal templates and fine tip Sharpie marker

    Hand:

  • Jeweler’s saw, 4/0 saw blades
  • Ring file, hallmark stamps, bench block and chasing hammer
  • Flush cutters, 240-600 grit sandpaper or sanding sticks from a beauty supply, tweezers
  • 3-6.5 mm round steel mandrels, rosary pliers and chain nose pliers
  • Soldering:

  • Solderite board, air/acetylene Silver-smith torch with #0 tip
  • Solder pick, Prip’s Flux in a spray bottle, quench and pickle with copper tongs
  • Finishing:

  • Shot-filled tumbler with burnishing compound and bench polisher
  • Cotton buffs or flexible shaft and hand piece with small buffs
  • Tripoli and Fabuluster polishing compounds, toothbrush and hot soapy water
  • Stone Setting:

  • Steel scribe, nitrile gloves, fine tipped applicator brushes and bezel burnisher
  • Acetone and rag for cleanup
