Work back and forth in one piece using cable patterns to create this knitted vest. Layer any outfit and stay warm all day long.

Description

No collection of cable patterns can be complete without a mock cable design. Here, you’ll work decreases and yarnovers (instead of rearranging stitches and knitting them in a new order), creating a fabric that resembles cliffs and rock formations on the coast of County Clare.

Designer: Daniela Nii

Difficulty: Easy

Yarn Weight: 6

Finished Size: 35 (39½ , 44, 48¾ , 53¼ )” bust circumference. Vest shown measures
35″; modeled with 1″ of positive ease.

Specific Yarn Used: Lion Brand Yarns Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% acrylic, 20% wool; 106 yd [97 m]/6 oz [170 g]): #99 fisherman, 4 (5, 5, 5, 6) balls.

Needles: Size 13 (9 mm): 32″ circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); stitch holders; spare needle for three-needle BO; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 10½ sts and 15 rows = 4″ in Mock cable patt.

Notes:

  • This vest is worked back and forth in one piece to the underarm, then fronts and back are worked separately.
  • A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches.
  • Slip the first stitch of each row purlwise with yarn in front and knit the last stitch of each row for a chain selvage.
  • During shaping, if there are not enough stitches to work each decrease with its companion yarnover, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
