Many knitters dread finding the phrases “at the same time,” “reverse all shaping,” and “continue in pattern” in their pattern instructions—and with good reason.

“At the same time” entails simultaneously juggling two sets of instructions, such as for armhole shaping and V-neck shaping.

“Reverse all shaping” usually means having to figure out how to make a cardigan’s right front from instructions for its left front.

“Continue in pattern” gets tricky when stitches are lost to armhole or neck shaping, or added with sleeve shaping, and what’s the best way of maintaining a stitch pattern when the number of stitches keeps changing?

The answer to all these conundrums is to chart out the instructions for your garment pieces.

Precisely plan the shaping of each piece as you draw the outline of its chart—this lets you concentrate on each set of instructions in turn, and lets you see how to flip one piece to create its mirror image.

Then fill in that outline with patterning—this lets you adjust the patterning to suit the changing stitch count, before you ever have to pick up yarn and needles.
