Description

Materials Needed to Complete This Project:

  • 24″ of 1.9 mm sterling silver bead wire, full bead
  • 12″ 1.2 mm sterling silver bead wire, full bead
  • 12″ 1.0 mm sterling silver bead wire, full bead
  • Small sterling silver spoon
  • Hard solder
  • Medium solder
  • Optional: 24″ 2.2 mm bead chain, clasp; 24″ 1.9 mm bead wire, 12″ 10-gauge half round sterling silver wire, sterling silver casting shot for granulation, 2 half-drilled freshwater pearls

Tools Needed to Complete This Project

  • Safety: Eye protection, ventilation blower or respirator
  • Hand: Set of mandrels, wire cutters, mechanic’s pliers with serrated jaws, Vise-Grips pliers or vise, cutters; bench pin, jeweler’s saw with 4/0 blades, saw blade lube; steel bench block and non-marring hammer for thinning wire solder; ring mandrel, rubber mallet, ring file, needle files, sanding sticks, circle template, scribe, 800-grit sandpaper, scissors.
  • Soldering: Respirator or soldering ventilation system, 6″ x 6″ soft Solderite soldering board; 50:50 solution of boric acid in denatured alcohol in a tightly capped jar, Batterns flux in a dropper bottle, small bowl or saucer, Prips flux in a spray bottle; fine-tipped tweezers, steel T-pins, air/acetylene Smith Silversmith torch with #0 tip and tank of fuel, quench, pickle pot and copper tongs; soldering pick and locking, heat-proof tweezers.
  • Finishing: Shot-filled tumbler and burnishing compound or Dawn dishwashing liquid; bench mounted polisher with muslin buff and Fabuluster or brass brush; tooth brush and hot soapy water. Optional: Ultrasonic.
  • Pearl mounting: 2-part clear epoxy, mixing cup, stir stick and broken saw blade
