Work in the round from the top down to create this oversized knitted sweater pattern.

Description

Take on big color with this oversized pullover! Bohus Stickning, a women’s cooperative from the Swedish province of Bohuslän, developed an iconic look for hand knitted sweaters between 1939 and 1969. Their style included colorwork, sometimes with three or more colors in a row, dotted with purl bumps. Our Bohuslän Sweater uses a chunky yarn and simplifies the knitting—you’ll only work with two colors at a time.

Designer: Karin Wilmoth

Difficulty: Intermediate

Yarn Weight: 5

Finished Size: 37¼ (41¼ , 45¼ , 49¼ , 53¼ , 57¼ , 61¼ )” bust circumference. Pullover shown measures 41¼ “; modeled with 7¾ ” of positive ease.

Specific Yarn Used: Brown Sheep Company Lamb’s Pride Bulky (85% wool, 15% mohair; 125 yd [114 m]/4 oz [113 g]): #BM156 aqua inlet (light blue; MC), 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6) skeins; #BM166 plum smoke (purple; CC1), 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3) skeins; #BM07 sable (brown; CC2), 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2) skein(s).

Needles: Size 11 (8 mm): 16″ and 32–47″ circular (cir), depending on size you are making. Size 13 (9 mm): 32–47″ cir and set of dpn. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); size K/10½ (6.5 mm) crochet hook; stitch holders; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 12 sts and 17 rnds = 4″ in St st on smaller needle; 12 sts and 14 rnds = 4″ in charted patt on larger needle; 11 sts and 14 rnds = 4″ in St st on larger needle.

Notes:

  • This pullover is worked in the round from the top down. The sleeves are worked in the round from the top down.
  • The chart is worked using the stranded method. Always pick up the first color over the second and pick up the second color from under the first; this will prevent tangling. Keep floats loose. For floats longer than four stitches, tack stranded yarn on wrong side of work.
