The striking Barbican Cardigan draws inspiration from Brutalist architecture of the early 20th century and plays with line and direction in unexpected ways. Horizontal bands in a welt stitch pattern lend depth and dimension while vertical lines of slipped-stitch ribbing add visual interest. The cardigan is worked in one piece from the bottom up, then is split at the underarms. The sleeves are picked up from the armholes and worked in the round.

Specific Yarn Used: Blue Sky Fibers Skyland (40% fine highland wool, 30% baby alpaca, 30% silk; 210 yd [192 m]/ 3 ½ oz [100 g]): #2410 Moonscape, 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10) skeins.

Needles: Size 6 (4 mm): 16″ and 32″ circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 21 sts and 32 rows = 4″ in Welt St patt.
