What You’ll Learn:

Learn to Knit with Beads with Laura Nelkin
This class focuses on developing bead knitting skills to prepare you to knit one of Laura’s (or another designer’s) beaded designs. Class will start with a basic overview on choosing yarn and beads for working with beads, then we’ll jump into basic beading techniques (both pre-strung and placed) and move onto more advanced ones as time allows. We’ll also discuss beaded cast ons and bind offs. This is an interactive and FUN class with lots of hands on learning.

The Best Yarn For the Job: How Fiber and Yarn Construction Affect Your Fabric with Sarah Solomon
Do you have an overflowing “yarn stash” and are unsure what projects would work best with certain yarns? We live in a golden age of fibers with a sometimes overwhelming number of yarns to choose from. In this class we will take a closer look at fibers and yarn with the ultimate goal of making better, more informed choices for our knitting projects and understanding the best use of those skeins we have in our stash. We will discuss the properties and sources of both animal and plant fibers, then talk about the processing that goes into making these fibers into specific types of yarns. We will discuss the differences between worsted and woolen-spun yarns and how plying affects yarn behavior by looking at examples of knit/purl textures, lace, cables and colorwork in a wide variety of yarns to see how fiber and yarn structure affect each type of fabric. If you’ve ever wondered about why a yarn pills, why it grows when you wear it, why it feels light or heavy, or wondered what yarn would be best for a cable pattern, a lace pattern, or colorwork, this is the class for you.  This class is lecture/discussion-based; we will not be knitting in class but we will be looking at and handling LOTS of samples. Feel free to bring some of your own yarn that you may have questions about.

About Your Knitting Instructor

Instructor Laura Nelkin
Instructor Laura Nelkin

Laura Nelkin lives in upstate New York, where the sunny season is short, leaving plenty of time to be indoors knitting. Though she has a degree in apparel design from Cornell University, she took to knitting years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her designs and techniques are innovative, fun, and will challenge you to think in new ways about your knitting. When not designing or knitting, she is gardening, whipping up yummy feasts with my family, and taking time to play! I’ve developed a healthy addiction to yoga and hiking…. and manage to sneak in some kind of physical activity every day (a great balance to knitting!)

Instructor Sarah Solomon

Sarah Solomon is a knitwear designer, writer and teacher based in New York City. Her patterns and articles have appeared in Interweave Knits, Knitscene, knit.wear, Pom Pom Quarterly, and Vogue Knitting, and in collections by yarn companies large and small. In addition to her self-published work she is the head of knitwear collections for Harrisville Designs, a historic woolen mill in Harrisville, NH, and has also recently joined the editorial team of Vogue Knitting. As someone who learned to knit as an adult, she still remembers the frustrations of the learning process and loves helping people to improve their knitting skills and explore new techniques. She enjoys teaching traditional techniques of all kinds, including cables, colorwork and twisted stitch knitting, as well as modern garment construction with a particular emphasis on details and fine finishing. She is also an avid sewer and spinner and loves handwork in many forms. In her design work, Sarah creates knitwear from exceptional yarns that are knittable, wearable and designed to last.
