What You’ll Learn

Plaid Workshop with Norah Gaughan

The simplest plaids can be made with stripes and chain stitch. In this Plaid Workshop, Norah will dive into knitting plaid to teach you how to create your own gorgeous pieces. We’ll cover how to add a little seed stitch texture to make weaving verticals a snap, plus learn how basic intarsia makes it possible for rich multi color plaids. Then work your way up to more complex plaids—as they are all easy!

Double Knitting with Amy Detjen

In this Double Knitting class, Amy will provide you with all the skills you need to start double knitting. You are knitting two layers of Stocking Stitch simultaneously on the same needles! This makes fabric that is reversible and cushy, with a mirror-image design on the two sides (white on black on one side, black on white on the other).

We’ll cover casting on, the double knitting technique in a solid color, then in colorwork and learn to follow charts. We’ll work on a circular project that you can turn into a headband or cowl, depending on how you want to finish it.

About Your Knitting Instructors

Norah Gaughan

The author of Wool Studio Vol. IV, Knitting Nature, and other books, Norah Gaughan has spent her life immersed in knitting—as a freelancer for yarn companies and knitting magazines, as the design director at JCA (she oversaw the Reynolds, Artful Yarns & Adrienne Vittadini Yarn lines); and as the design director at Berroco for nearly nine years (where she headed up the design team and published sixteen eponymous booklets). Now an independent designer working out of her studio in historic Harrisville, NH, Norah’s latest ventures include being a member of the Brooklyn Tweed design team. Her newest labor of love, Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook (Abrams) showcases the results of her 30 year spate of inventing new cable patterns.

Amy Detjen

Amy loves everything about knitting and knitters. She was the “List Mom” of the original Knit List for over five years, which was the Ravelry of the 1990s. Amy is passionate about solving stubborn knitting problems and helping knitters over hurdles. She doesn’t design too much, but would rather teach and talk about knitting. She teaches at consumer events and retreats, regional gatherings, international knitting events, and has been Meg Swansen’s assistant at her Knitting Camp for 26 years. Amy co-authored Knitting with Two Colors with Meg Swansen, and has two popular Craftsy classes: Custom Yoke Sweaters, which has lots of tips on shaping for circular sweaters, and Simple Sweaters: Stranded and Steeked which teaches knitting with two colors and how to steek your work!

Pricing

Starting at just $1,995 per person (for two knitters to share a Double Occupancy Deluxe Room), this extremely limited event includes lodging at “The Hacienda” at The Hotel Santa Fe, all meals, two knitting workshops, a private tour of the International Folk Art Museum, and a gift bag. All taxes and gratuities are also included.

How to Get Here

Fly into Albuquerque International Airport (ABQ) 1 hour and 10 minute drive to Hotel. Santa Fe Regional Airport is closer (20 minutes away) but not all airlines may fly there.

Sandia Shuttle runs from the Albuquerque airport to the hotel (call 888-775-5696 for reservations, $35).

The retreat ends after breakfast on Sunday so plan your flights with enough time to get back to the airport to catch your flight.
