Beads, Baubles & Jewels: The Artist’s Relationship with Color

A common thread for all artists is their relationship with color. Sometimes it’s bold, sometimes it’s muted, and other times it’s noticeably absent. In this episode of Beads, Baubles & Jewels, we talk about using works from the masters to inspire our own motifs and color palettes. Shown above, the Humblebeads polymer clay beads and pendant from artist Heather Powers are inspired by Van Gogh’s painting, Starry Night. I love the way Heather made the pendants representative and then went a little more abstract with the beads. Starry Night also inspires the bead key. You can see the swirling sky and stars within the glass itself. And, the green beads made by the same artist interpret the colors without the motif. The bracelet from Beadshop.com is a great example of interpreting the color palette from your favorite artwork in beads. I met Aja Vaz at ISGB’s conference, The Gathering, and we became instant friends. Her work is amazing! I’d been feeling like I’d seen every bead there is to see and then I saw her beautiful lampwork hollows. Incredible! She’s an impressive instructor and it was a pleasure sharing her talents with our viewers. Kate Richbourg is a force of nature. She’s also one of my favorite people. I love the way she inspires everyone around her. She’s an amazing instructor who has the skills, passion and patience to teach new beaders and experienced metalsmiths alike.
