What is it???

I bought these at the thrift store because I thought they could hold a few of my cones upright while I worked the threads together.  Now that I am done with my project, I am curious what these are.  Since the center spindle is adjustable, I thought maybe it was to used to measure or work a hank off a cone??? Has anyone ever seen or used one of these?

what is it???

I found these at the thrift store and used them to hold my cones while I worked the threads together, but I really want to know what they are supposed to be used for.  The center spindle is adjustable so I thought maybe it was used to measure off a hank from a cone???

What is it?

Can anyone tell me what these tools are/were used for?  I found them at the trift store and I wanted to see if they would hold a few cones of yarn while I crocheted them together.  There is one center spindle that is adjustable and two stationary spindles.  I thought maybe it was used to measure out yarn or take yarn from a cone on one spindle and create a hank of yarn on the other two???  A standard cone doesn't fit or stay on very well…so I am curious what their real purpose is.  Thanks!
