Weaving Exhibition in New Mexico: Cordelia Theimer Gardella
Weavers in New Mexico: here’s a weaving exhibition you won’t want to miss! September’s featured artist at Weaving Southwest in Arroyo Seco (near Taos) is Cordelia Theimer Gardella. She is a tapestry weaver and photographer whose work “examines open landscapes and the responses they evoke,” according to her website. Weaving Southwest will be exhibiting a show featuring a selection of her work all month long.
Her work is abstract, reducing landscapes to their essential shapes and colors. She works with hand-dyed yarns, so she can get just the right colors for each tapestry and explore how those colors interact. One recurring theme in her work, both photography and tapestry, is the horizon. She draws a comparison between the horizon and the horizontal weft of her tapestry weaving. This can be seen in much of her work.
Cornelia was born and educated in Germany, but has always had a fascination with the American Southwest. In 2005, she came to New Mexico to study traditional fiber arts at Northern New Mexico College. She hasn’t lost her connection to Germany, however, and now spends part of her time in New Mexico, and part of her time in Germany. She weaves and teaches in both countries.
A member of the American Tapestry Alliance, Cornelia’s work has been shown in galleries and weaving exhibitions across the United States. Her work has also been shown in Germany, Poland, Iceland, Sweden, and elsewhere.
If you’d like to meet Cornelia, there’s a reception on September 25th from 5-7pm. You’ll hear all about the inspiration behind her beautiful tapestries and connect with other local weavers. Let me know if you’ll be able to make it, so I can live vicariously through you!
P.S. Want to weave your own bold, geometric wall tapestries? Rachel Denbow’s new book DIY Woven Art jump-starts creativity by teaching you basic tapestry techniques. You’ll also learn how to build several different DIY looms. I can tell you I’m itching to try out just about every project in this gorgeous book. Order your copy today!
