Threads of Heaven
According to legend, the Chinese empress Leizu was the first to person to discover silk nearly five thousand years ago when a silkworm cocoon dropped in her tea. When she removed the cocoon from the steaming liquid, she found it easily unwound into a single, lovely thread. While there is no way to know if this story is true, we do know that the Chinese were the first to discover the wonders of silk, and for many, elaborate silk work and China remain synonymous.
For those who love the beauty of traditional Chinese silken textiles, the exhibit Threads of Heaven, now on display at the Denver Art Museum, is a must see. The show celebrates the beauty of Chinese silk textiles created during the Qing Dynasty and features items such as woven lotus shoes and elaborate traditional tapestries.
