Michigan Fiber Festival

What’s better than a weekend fiber fest? One that spans nearly an entire week! The Michigan Fiber Festival in Allegan, Michigan, offers five days of fiber fun. Classes start on Wednesday, August 15 with the rest of the festival opening on August 17. Last year our own Gus Baxter did a Q & A with one of the festival’s organizers. Here’s their conversation. —Christina

Get ready for a five-day fiber experience at the Michigan Fiber Festival. Held at the Allegan Fair Grounds, this is one of the largest fiber festivals in Michigan. Come for the day or spend the weekend. The fair ground offers ample camping spaces and encourages festival-goers to stay and experience the festival each day. There is a huge marketplace full of unique fiber goodies and workshops ranging from spinning and dying fibers to weaving your own baskets. After speaking with Glenda Plummer, chair of the publicity committee, I can see how this festival is celebrating its 21st year.

Gus: Tell me about the history of the Michigan Fiber Festival.

Glenda: The Michigan Fiber Festival is one of Michigan’s largest fiber festivals and is held in beautiful Western Michigan at the Allegan County Fair Grounds. The Michigan Fiber Festival is a fiber arts celebration that promotes the interests of individuals and businesses related to natural fibers. This year’s fiber workshops begin on Wednesday with four full days of classes covering all things fiber related including fiber producing animals and their management and care. The festival begins on Saturday and runs through 4 p.m. on Sunday. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 100 vendors displaying.

Gus: Pretend you talking to someone who has never been to your fiber festival, what would you highlight as your “WOW” attractions?

Glenda: The vendors are truly awe-inspiring. There are over 100 booths full of all things fiber related. You can find everything from raw fleeces through ready-to-wear clothing in the market place. There are several buildings full of goodies for sale and they overflow out of doors.

The Michigan Fiber Festival Workshops offer a wide variety of classes taught by some of the fiber world’s finest instructors. Check out the list of offerings on the web site.
