InspiRED to Knit
Many of you knit as well as weave, so this week’s BeWeave It focuses on a very important campaign in the knitting community that’s working to raise awareness about heart disease, the number one killer of women in the United States.
In honor of American Heart Month, Interweave is taking part in the 2012 Stitch Red initiative. Started in 2010 by Jimmy Beans Wool owner Laura Zander, the campaign aims to educate women about the dangers of heart disease. What started with just one wool company has since spread throughout the industry and now many manufacturers, distributors, and retail stores—including the Interweave Store—are taking part in the campaign. Stitch Red is part of the The Heart Truth campaign started in 2002 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, as a way to education women about the warning signs, dangers, and ways to ultimately reduce the risk of heart disease.
Currently, the Interweave Store has a collection of knitting patterns entitled InspiRED to Knit. All of the patterns feature beautiful red textiles, and 5% of the profits will go to The Heart Truth. Whether you’re a knitter, are friends with knitters, or know a woman with heart disease, you can find out more about the Stitch Red campaign and how to participate here.
