Handwoven Call for Submissions: March/April 2019 – Americana: North American Weaving
For the past few years, the March/April issue of Handwoven has been about regional weaving, whether that meant regions within a continent or regions in the world, with themes like World Weaving, East Meets West, and Scandinavian-Inspired. This year we chose Americana as a theme with the hopes of inspiring projects that reflect regional weaving within the North American continent.
With its vast expanse and varied population, it is only normal that weaving within different regions of the North American continent has developed in different ways. If you live in a sunny warm place, you probably shy away from using thick wool and sturdy fabric construction and instead veer more toward fibers and weave structures that don’t hold in the heat. You may continue to honor weaving traditions your ancestors brought with them when they came to North America, or you may have developed your own weaving style based on weaving and art you see in your community. The colors of the landscape in your region might also be the inspiration for your weaving such as the red rocks of the Southwest, the cool misty forests of the Northwest, or the stormy coast of the Northeast.
Whatever the reason, we want to hear your stories and see the weaving you do that celebrates the great continent of North America.
