Call for Submissions: Handwoven January/February 2019 – The Best of Both Worlds

Here it is, early January 2018, and we are already thinking about Handwoven in 2019. Part of the reason is that 2019 marks 40 years since Linda Ligon started the magazine in 1979, so it’s a big year for us. In addition, at the advice of a reader, we decided to increase the time between Handwoven calls for submissions and submission due dates to approximately 4 months. Everything about a handwoven project, from designing to sampling, warping, weaving, and finishing, is more enjoyable when there is sufficient time to enjoy the process and do each task well.

Historically, our January/February issue is our fiber issue, and 2019 is no exception. The theme of the issue is “The Best of Both Worlds: Yarn Blends.” We are hoping you will use this theme as an incentive to travel down some new pathways, or maybe down some familiar pathways using yarns that are a combination of two or more fibers. There are some much-loved and well-used combinations such as silk and wool or cotton and linen, but we have noticed some combinations of fibers that we aren’t as familiar with, such as wool and cotton and silk and linen, and we would like to know how those combinations perform as warp and weft and what they are like to work with. You can access the color palette for the issue on our website.

Yarn blends behave differently than single-fiber yarns while weaving and in wet finishing, making them the perfect choice for certain projects. Send us your projects and articles about yarn blends and smart fiber choices. For those of you who would like to plan even further ahead, the editorial calendar for 2019 is also on the website. We haven’t developed all of the palettes for the year yet, but if you contact us about the palette for a specific issue, we will get it in the works.

Here are our due dates for proposals and submissions:
