World Wide Spin in Public Day 2012
The fourth annual World Wide Spin in Public Day, held on September 15th, was celebrated far and wide. Guild websites, Facebook pages, and Ravelry groups were buzzing with plans for gatherings and demonstrations. Here are a few groups that shared their fiber skills with the public:
Spin City Guild (New York, New York)
From Donna: "We met at Heckscher Picnic Area in Central Park for SIP Day this year. Last year's SIP Day was in City Hall Park and it happened to be the first day of Occupy Wall Street, so it was pretty chaotic. But this year's event was great! There were about fifteen of us and the weather was beautiful! We spun from 12:30 to 5:30 pm and we had several spectators. And I somehow came home with more fiber than I brought. That always seems to happen with this group." See more photos of the guild's day in Central Park.
Genesee Valley Handspinners Guild (New York)
The guild hosts the Finger Lake Fiber Festival in Rochester Hemlock, New York. The festival dates fall on SIP Day each year, so guild members are already preparing demonstrations for next year's festival, September 21 and 22, which will again coincide with SIP Day.
Old Economy Village (Pennsylvania)
From Mary: "SIP Day was a great success. We had about twenty people attend with spinning wheels and drop spindles. We could not have dialed in a better day-sunny and seventy-degrees! Regular visitors to Old Economy Village stopped by the circle of spinners and enjoyed the opportunity to see and learn about the art [of handspinning]. The individuals you see in costume are volunteers at Old Economy."
