De-cluttering versus Being Prepared

Accio The Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning!

I've been on a mission to de-clutter my house. This desire to de-clutter is at constant odds with a desire to keep things in case I need it one day—the Girl Scout in me wants to be prepared, and the environmentalist in me does not want to be wasteful. Figuring out how to balance these things is a constant challenge—not unlike spinning a balanced yarn.

On the one hand, I like to have things easily accessible so that I can sit down at my spinning wheel when I have a spare moment and make progress on my latest project (spinning yarn for the Barton Cottage Shrug from the 2011 issue of Jane Austen Knits) and on the other hand, having things sitting out all the time makes for a cluttered living space. However, one thing I am sure to keep accessible is The Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning because, although it takes up a lot of valuable shelf space, it is my go-to resource when I need to figure out grist or troubleshoot something wonky on my wheel.

When I get too deep into figuring out the delicate balance of my living space, I start to fantasize about having a room like Hermione Granger's beaded purse in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—you know, the one enchanted with the undetectable extension charm that allowed her to carry around her entire library in a tiny little bag. She also was able to magically request an item from the bag with her wand, as in "Accio The Alden Amos Big Book of Handspinning!" The ability to set my dishes washing themselves with the flick of a wand would be handy, too. But I digress.

This mission to de-clutter has also extended to my life at work and in turn to Spin-Off magazine and Spinning Daily. We are really taking a look at both to figure out how to make them serve you best. To this end, we have put together a quick survey to give you a chance to let us know what you really want from us and Spin-Off magazine. Please take a few minutes to tell us what you think (survey ends August 15).

Happy spinning,

P.S. Don't forget!
