Weavers in the NEWS

The Weavers Guild of Boston published a book featuring the work of current members.

NEWS, the New England Weavers Seminar, was held in Northampton, Massachusetts, on July 11-14, 2013. Weaving students and instructors converged on the Smith College campus for four textile-filled days. In addition to the runway fashion show, gallery, and exhibits, Margo Selby shared the story of her own textile journey in an address entitled "Craft, Design, and Industry-My Career in Woven Textiles.

The thirteen guilds represented at NEWS created table displays featuring their members' work. The Weavers' Guild of Boston  displayed many of the woven pieces featured in the guild's new publication, Interlaced. The book celebrates the guild's ninetieth anniversary through the textile work of about one hundred current members. The guild's gallery page has information on past study projects and workshops. I'm especially fond of the samplers created in the Opposites Attract workshop!

John will be teaching tablet weaving at SOAR in St. Charles, IL, this year. Photo: Kate Larson.

My friend, tablet weaver John Mullarkey, was also among the impressive group of instructors at the seminar. John is a great teacher and is known throughout the fiber community as a kind and clever guy. Check out the free software he developed to create pattern drafts for tablet weaving.

John will also be a mentor at SOAR (Spin-Off Autumn Retreat) this year. He will be teaching Tablet Weaving for Spinners and retreat sessions using the Zoom Loom, the new and improved pin loom born out of his collaboration with Schacht Spindle Company.
