The Redwood Empire Handweavers and Spinners Guild (California)

The Redwood Empire Handweavers and Spinners Guild (California) is organizing a Fleecy Fun Fiber Foray as an outreach event for this year’s Conference of Northern California Handweavers, Spinners, Dyers & Basketmakers to be held in October. With support of the Sonoma Community Center, the CNCH 2009 Guilds, the Silverado and Tamalpais Guilds, and many businesses, a celebration of the 2009 International Year of Natural Fibres took place in April. Spinners, weavers, knitters, dyers, and demonstrators in basketry, creative stitchery, fiber wire artistry, locker hooking, alpaca handling, rope making, and felting led the interactive public all day long from booth to barn into the world of fiber. Suyin Stein said, “People left with colorful ropes draped around their necks like jewelry, clutching their knitting needles in one hand and bits of felt in the other, and looked starry eyed as their hearts and minds were sated with fiber arts.” She feels we participate in outreach not to show off our skills, but “in hopes that someone will become as excited as we are about the fiber arts.”
