Spinzilla 2015Are You Ready?
Spinzilla is one of the coolest group spinning events around. Now in its third year, the competition challenges spinners all over the world to see how much yarn they can produce in a week. Spinzilla is hosted by the Spinning and Weaving Group (SWG), which is part of The National Needlearts Association (TNNA), and aims to promote spinning in several ways. First, the dedicated crew behind the event wants to encourage us to make time in our busy days for more spinning. Additionally, proceeds from the event help to support TNNA's Needle Arts Mentoring Program, which endeavors to ". . . promote and encourage relationships between adults and youth, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a feeling of achievement through the teaching of needle arts."
Spinzilla will be held October 5‒11, 2015. Teams are hosted by fiber-related businesses that are members of SWG. Each team can have up to twenty-five registered spinners, and you don't need to live near your team members or spin together during the competition. There are many online teams available for those who don't live near a local fiber shop or spinning group that is participating. You can learn more about the teams that have already registered on the Spinzilla blog and Ravelry group. If you are interested in creating your own team, you can learn more on the registration page. (Team registration ends August 17.)
With so many great teams registered already, it can be hard to choose which you would like to join! At the time of writing, forty-five teams are listed on the website! From September 1‒October 2, you can go online and register for the team of your choice. Registration is open to anyone, so if you have a special team you want to join, be sure to do it as soon as registration opens! For more details on how the competition and registration work, check out the Spinzilla FAQ.
