John Hains, treasurer for the Queensland Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists, Ltd. (Australia), will “stop at nothing to knit socks.” In preparation for a trip he contacted the airlines to ask if bamboo knitting pins could be taken on board and was informed they would be confiscated by security as a potential weapon. In an issue of the group’s newsletter, Clippings, he explained how the bamboo sticks served with satay by the airline on one flight were made into knitting pins using a coin, pencil sharpener, and emery board. Heating the pins sufficiently in a microwave to destroy any organisms, he completed two pairs of socks in three weeks from wool purchased at a small shop in Stockholm by the time he returned home.
