Fernwood 1891 opened earlier this year in Fennville, Michigan, as a local source for "fresh art and fresh produce," but artisan owner Dawn Soltysiak has been active locally for more than thirteen years. Dawn is the resident artist at Khnemu Studio, where she has gallery space for her own pottery, in addition to the works of twenty-five other Michigan potters. She and her husband, Rob, continue to grow and diversify Fernwood 1891. You can follow their progress in adding a new coffee shop on Facebook.

The Fernwood 1891 community of artisans is growing and includes makers of many stripesfarmers to potters to fiber artists. This weekend, the shop is hosting a Holiday Maker's Market. Lisa Truman, a spinner, knitter, and weaver from northern Indiana is joining the event and will be demonstrating fiber crafts all weekend. Lisa is well known in the region as a shearer (of sheep mostly, but she also shears goats, llamas, and alpacas) and as a generous fount of knowledge. She has recently cut back from shearing nearly 3,000 sheep each year to about 600 to make more time for production fiber work. She spins pound after pound of custom handspun on a 24-inch Reeves wheel for shepherds and reenactors near and far. Her handwoven goods have quite a following as well!

If you are in the Fennville area this weekend, stop by the Maker's Market to see Lisa in action, listen to live music, and pick up some beautiful handmade gifts.
