Las Arañas Spinners & Weavers Guild
A field trip to the National Hispanic Cultural Center was conducted by the Las Arañas Spinners & Weavers Guild (New Mexico) in November. A docent led members through the Mayan Textile Art Exhibition focusing on weavings from Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico, explaining the ancient traditions and imagery woven on backstrap looms. They were encouraged to view the works as fine art instead of folk art apparel and learned the influence of three indigenous design forms: brocade, embroidery, and ikat (jaspe). The use of color by modern and contemporary artists was also addressed. Admission fees were paid for by the guild.
